ILM Welcomes Class of 2014

The Institute for Leadership in Ministry welcomed the Class of 2014 as the new academic year began. The 78 members of the combined English and Spanish classes come from 27 different parishes. Young adults (ages 19-40) account for about one-third of the class population.

As in a mosaic, the Institute today reflects the diversity of cultures which makes up the local church of San Jose. Represented in the class are different cultures and traditions including Chinese, Filipino, Hispanic, Vietnamese, and American. As the ILM community, students learn from one another, minister to each other and are formed as leaders who will work together in collaboration to serve the Diocese.

The Institute is a three-year formation program in Catholic theology, pastoral ministry and spirituality; and training in leadership. Candidates for the Institute are recommended by their pastors. Perspective students are typically already involved in pastoral ministry, have demonstrated a potential for leadership and are willing to make a personal commitment to their own formation. Institute classes are held at the Five Wounds campus in San Jose.

Last month, ILM students numbering 220 plus alumni gathered as a community of faith to give thanks and praise to God. This Evening of Prayer is an annual event set aside for students to be attentive to their spiritual formation.
