- Description
The Red Mass is so-called because that is the liturgical color for Wisdom. In the Middle Ages, canonical judges and, in England, the lawmakers, would don crimson robes as did the celebrants who solemnly processed into the cathedral to invoke Wisdom in their daily acts and judgments. That tradition is still in place in Europe and across the US. The Red Mass will be celebrated this Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009 beginning at 6 pm at Mission Santa Clara. At that time, Bishop McGrath will convey the St. Thomas More Society’s Annual Award to the Hon. Raymond J. Davilla, Jr., Judge of Superior Court in Santa Clara County. Immediately following the Red Mass will be a reception in Benson Center at SCU with guest speaker and new SCU president, Rev. Michael Eng.
Judge Davilla was a Certified Family Law Specialist until his appointment to the bench. He is on the SCU Law School Board of Visitors, the Board of Fellows, and the Board of Regents. In 2007 he was honored by the Law School as the Owens Lawyer of the Year. He is active in St. Christopher’s Parish and has served as President of the Holy Name Society and President of the School Board besides serving as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector.
