The program focusing on prevention was created by a project, New Frontiers in Prevention of Breast Cancer. "Our intention is to take a stand and create the possibility of prevention of breast cancer. We want to learn and incorporate tips for prevention and reduce our risk of breast cancer and other cancers. We have much to learn. Each day we make choices for ourselves and our families. Future generations depend on what we do today", said Bobbe Smirni, parishioner and founder New Frontiers in Prevention of Breast Cancer. "
Dr. Marcia Stefanick, Stanford University and Medical Center, and pioneer in the work of prevention served as keynote speaker. She focuses on her Top 10 Prevention Tips and Medical Recommendations.
Top 10 Prevention Tips and Medical Recommendations
- Be as lean as possible without becoming overweight.
- Be physically active for at least 30 minutes each day.
- Avoid sugary drinks. Limit consumption of energy-dense foods, particularly processed foods high in added sugar.
- Eat more of a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes such as beans.
- Limit consumption of red meats (such as beef, pork, and lamb) and avoid processed meats.
- If consumed at all, limit consumption of alcoholic drinks to 2 a day for men, 1 a day for women.
- Limit Consumption of salty foods and foods processed with salt.
- Don't use supplements to protect against cancer.
- Mothers to breastfeed; infants to be breast fed. It is best for mothers to breastfeed exclusively for up to 6 months, then add other liquids and foods.
- After treatment, cancer survivors should follow the recommendations for cancer prevention.
Specifically to breast cancer, the Women's Hospital at El Camino Hospital released wonderful news.
"As of Sept. 23, 2010, the new Federal Govt Health Reform Care Bill requires no out-of-pocket cost for preventative care, including annual mammograms for Medicare and privately insured women over 40 years old. Please make sure to take advantage of these changes to your health coverage".
