Director of Music – (Full-Time) – Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph, San Jose

Position Summary:

The Director of Music works alongside with the Clergy and the faithful of our Parish to provide a deeper relationship with God and with one another. In collaboration with the planning committees and volunteers, the Director supervises and implements the blending of liturgical music with Word and Sacrament and thus enables the spiritual and dynamic growth of the parish community. The main goal of the Music Director is to prepare music that will lead the parishioners of the St. Joseph to “full, conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations” (Sacrosanctum Concilium #14).

The Director of Music for the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph Parish provides pastoral and professional leadership, and coordination for planning and implementing the worship life of this parish community, including Sunday Masses, Holy Days, Christmas, Triduum, Easter, Confirmation, funerals and weddings as well as any other special liturgical event.

This position also includes responsibility for Cathedral Social-Media – such as Live Streaming, Facebook, and Cathedral website maintenance.  Will also be involved with the Cathedral Foundation to support the historic Cathedral, social services, and the performing arts through music concert performances and other events.

The position will currently be 20-25hrs/week but has the possibility of increased hours depending on post CoVid-19 pandemic environment.  The Director reports to the Pastor and will work closely with Parochial Vicars, Catechetical Directors, Wedding/Quinceañera Coordinator, all music ministry individuals (volunteers and paid). This person of faith is responsible for the effective planning, coordination, and execution of the music for all parish liturgical/sacramental celebrations.

Specific duties/responsibilities include:

  • Provide for music and musicians for all Sunday and other major celebrations. Build repertoire and select liturgically appropriate music for all liturgies with a goal of engaging the congregation in worship.
  • Serving as principal musician and ensemble director.
  • Recruiting, scheduling, and ensuring proper preparation of all parish music ministers.
  • Train, direct, supervise and expand choirs, ensembles, and volunteer cantors, etc. in accordance with parish evangelization efforts.
  • Work to foster unity among all parish musicians, and to create a spirit of collaboration with the presiders and other liturgical ministers.
  • Select, develop, and print participation aids for the congregation.
  • Organize and offer liturgical minister training and formation.
  • Support Diocesan Masses and events per requests.
  • Keep abreast of developments in liturgical practice and music nationally as well as Diocesan policies and guidelines and update music ministers and the parish on these matters.
  • Responsible to coordinate and execute the Livestreaming of requested Masses and events.
  • Maintain and update Cathedral website, Facebook page, and other social media as needed as ongoing communication/evangelization of Cathedral and Diocesan community.
  • Monitoring the liturgical budget.
  • Coordinating weekly announcements and Prayers of the Faithful.
  • Attending and contributing to monthly Pastoral Staff Meetings and Liturgy Committee meetings.
  • Other assignments as requested by the Pastor.

 

Requirements:

  • Must be a practicing Catholic and possess strong knowledge of Catholic music and worship.
  • Possess a passion for liturgical music and is committed to reflecting the parish community’s needs. Must be committed to quality liturgical celebrations and concert performance music.
  • Experience as a director and conductor in liturgical settings; skilled in working with a variety of people and diverse teams with sensitivity to a multi-cultural parish community.
  • Skilled accompanist (piano and organ) with ability to lead ensembles, and a pleasant singing voice.
  • Strong leadership, well-organized, and able to work in a collaborative setting; must be attentive to detail with good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Dependable, responsible, self-motivated, creative, and accountable.
  • Working knowledge of sound systems, microphones, and live streaming/projection systems
  • Must successfully pass required background and fingerprinting check as well as Safe environment training.
  • Computer proficiency including word processing, planners/spreadsheets, worship aid creation.
  • The preferred applicant will have significant music/liturgical ministry experience, knowledge of and pastoral application of Church liturgical documents and music resources, and a bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent education and experience.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred. At minimum be able to sing in Spanish and assist bilingual music ministers, if not fully bilingual.
