Bay Scholars 2019 Thanksgiving Luncheon
November 22, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 1:30 pm
Bay Scholars will host its sixth annual “Giving Thanks by Giving Back” Thanksgiving Luncheon at the Julia Morgan Ballroom on Friday, November 22. The event, which typically features a range of student speakers, compelling multimedia presentations and distinguished guests, will feature Governor Gavin Newsom as this year’s special guest and keynote speaker.
“Governor Newsom has said that ‘If we are serious about closing the income gap, we must be serious about closing the opportunity gap,’” said Bay Scholars founder and board president Clint Reilly. “That is precisely what Bay Scholars is all about, and we are honored to welcome the Governor to this year’s luncheon.”
Since its founding, Bay Scholars, has disbursed more than $5.5 million in scholarships to promising low-income students throughout the Bay Area seeking to obtain an empowering, high-quality college-prep high school education. With more than 500 students currently on scholarship at 14 private high schools throughout the region and a 100% college acceptance rate among its participants, Bay Scholars has proven to be transformative for disadvantaged children and their families.
“In addition to financial assistance, Bay Scholars provides active personal support to our students, including college campus visits and mentoring, as well as consultation services with partner school administrators,” explains executive director Caitlin Curran Kavanagh. “Our success stems from the relationships we nurture with our students, their families, and school communities.”
The Thanksgiving luncheon is the organization’s primary annual fundraiser, an event that has become synonymous with exciting programming and a deep spirit of generosity. The cost of the luncheon is fully underwritten, allowing 100% of donations received go directly to deserving students. Emceed by local performing legend Brian Copeland, past events have featured special guests including California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, Senator Dianne Feinstein, UC President Janet Napolitano and University of San Francisco President Stephen A. Privett.
