Prayer and Solidarity for Migrant Families Vigil

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
In light of the recent developments on the US~ Mexico border with families being separated, I am calling all Catholics from our Diocese to join me in an evening of prayer and solidarity for migrant families and immigration reform. This vigil will be held at the Cathedral Basilica of San Jose on Tuesday, July 17th, from 7-8 PM. There will be scripture readings, prayer, songs, and a resource center for ways to act for justice for immigrants. We, as people of faith, are called to put our faith into action. As St. James states, “For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.” (JAS 2:26) Thus, this evening of prayer and advocacy is a concrete way in which we can all put our faith into action while being in solidarity with our migrant brothers and sisters.
As I stated in my most recent letter. although we are hundreds of miles from the border, what has happened along the US-Mexico border over the past few weeks has a direct impact on many of our own people. Images of crying children, separated from their mothers, and the anguish of mothers whose infants have been taken from their arms has increased the anxiety and fear of mothers and children living here in many of our parishes and neighborhoods. The separation of detained minor children from their parents is un-American, un-Christian and inhumane. This practice is mean-spirited and betrays our nation’s tradition of welcome to migrants and refugees. We cannot lose what is at the heart of this tragedy: the fact that there are children and families in the crosshairs of our government’s actions and that the trauma that these children suffer will have long term effects on their spiritual, emotional and physical well-being. In closing, let us all remember the words addressed to the Israelites on their desert journey: “You shall not oppress a resident alien; you well know how it feels to be an alien, since you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt” (Exodus 23:9). I look forward to being with you on July 17th so that we may lift up our migrant brothers and sisters in communal prayer.

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas,
A la luz de los recientes acontecimientos en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México con familias separadas, llamo a todos los católicos de nuestra Diócesis a unirse a mí en una noche de oración y solidaridad para las familias migrantes y por la reforma migratoria. Esta vigilia se llevará a cabo en la Catedral Basílica de San José el martes 17 de julio de 7 a 8 pm. Habrá lecturas de las Escrituras, oraciones, alabanzas y un lugar de recursos para llenar diferentes formas de actuar en pro de la justicia para los inmigrantes.
Nosotros, como personas de fe, estamos llamados a poner nuestra fe en acción. Como dice la Palabra de Dios. “Porque así como un cuerpo sin espíritu está muerto, así también la fe que no produce obras está muerta”. (Santiago 2:26). Por lo tanto, esta noche de oración en defensa es una forma concreta en la que todos podemos poner nuestra fe en acción mientras somos solidarios con nuestros hermanos y hermanas migrantes.
Como indiqué en mi Carta Pastoral más reciente. “Estamos a cientos de millas de la frontera, sin embargo, lo que sucedió a lo largo de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México en las últimas semanas tiene un impacto directo en nuestra propia persona. Las imágenes de niños llorando, separados de sus madres, y la angustia de las madres cuyos bebés han sido quitados de sus brazos han aumentado la ansiedad y el temor de las madres y los niños que viven aquí en muchas de nuestras parroquias y vecindarios.
La separación de los niños menores de edad deteniendo a sus padres no es estadounidense, no es cristiano y es inhumano. Esta práctica es mezquina y traiciona la tradición de bienvenida de nuestra nación a los migrantes y refugiados. No podemos perder lo que está en el corazón de esta tragedia: el hecho de que hay niños y familias en la mira de las acciones de nuestro gobierno y que el trauma que sufren estos niños tendrá efectos a largo plazo en su bienestar espiritual, emocional y físico”.
Para concluir, recordemos todas las palabras dirigidas a los israelitas en su viaje por el desierto: “No oprimirás a los extranjeros, pues ustedes saben lo que es ser extranjero. Lo fueron ustedes en la tierra de Egipto.” (Éxodo 23: 9). Espero ardientemente estar con ustedes el 17 de julio para elevar nuestras oraciones por nuestros hermanos y hermanas migrantes juntos en una oración comunitaria.
