Fr. Robert Elias Barcelos, OCD – To Live Life to the Full: Finding Our Freedom in Christ
Growing up, Fr. Robert was quite ignorant of Christ and lukewarm in his Catholic faith. Come High School, he became captivated by the “charm” of worldly allurements and entirely immersed himself in the graffiti crew and hip-hop subculture. Eventually his “religious mediocrity” began to change. The ‘party scene’ had lost its appeal and he became driven by a thirst for truth. He wanted to acquire deeper purpose and meaning in life, but by this time, he had become antagonistic toward Christianity, and rejected organized religion all together.
As a young artist in the search for wisdom and fulfillment, he looked to Far-Eastern spirituality and “New-Age” philosophy. Yet, in the midst of all that he thought would bring peace and wholeness, he experienced an inescapable emptiness, the void inside of something still terribly missing. It was as a college student, that Fr. Robert experienced the impact of God’s mercy and thus his zeal for mischief was, by God’s grace, quickly transforming into a burning desire to dedicate his whole life to the love of Christ. This major turn-around gave birth to a religious vocation as a Carmelite. He entered the monastery a few weeks after his twenty-first birthday in 1999, made Solemn Vows on the Solemnity of the Mother of God in 2006, and on June 13, 2008, just shy of turning thirty, was ordained as a Priest of our Lord Jesus Christ.
