Position Description

Develop and coordinate high school youth ministry at St. Justin’s Parish.

MAJOR POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND REGULAR ACTIVITIES

Goals:
1. To empower youth to live as disciples of Christ in our world today
2. To draw young people to responsible participation in the life, mission, and work of the faith community.
3. To foster the total personal and spiritual growth of each young person.

Responsibilities:
1. Oversee, plan, and organize the catechetical efforts for high school youth (grades 9-12 utilizing a comprehensive youth ministry model, including Confirmation.

2. Utilize effective means of communicating with youth, their parents and families about the variety of ministry and program opportunities available.

3. Support and resource parents as the leaders of the domestic church of the home, and the primary formers of the faith of their children.

4. Work within a budget approved by the Director of Faith Formation and Pastor.

5. Advocate for participation by youth in the ministries and service organizations of the parish.

Requirements:

A) Skills, Knowledge and Ability | YMC = Youth Ministry Coordinator

  • A YMC is a person of Christian faith who strives to live a life guided by the Gospel, rooted in regular personal prayer, and lived out in the Catholic faith community.
  • A YMC’s faith has been formed in the Catholic theological tradition; a YMC is knowledgeable in Sacred Scripture, Christology, Ecclesiology, Catholic Doctrine, Sacramental and Moral Theology.
  • A YMC is an effective leader and administrator; skilled in communication, pastoral planning, budgeting, legal concerns and managing volunteers.
  • A YMC understands the needs, development and culture of youth and can effectively respond to these in ministry programming.
  • A YMC understands and effectively apply the principles, processes and methods of:
    -Adolescent evangelization and catechesis.
    -Individual, communal and liturgical prayer in ministry with young people.
    -Building community with young people.
    -Pastoral care for youth.
    -Youth formation in justice and service.
    -Leadership development for adults and youth in youth ministry.
    -Advocacy on behalf of youth and youth ministry.
  • A YMC understands the critical role that families play in the healthy formation of youth and can effectively integrate a family perspective into youth ministry.
  • A YMC understands the importance that cultural heritage brings to the development of faith. A DYM can integrate multicultural experiences into all dimensions of youth ministry and can respond to the unique needs of youth from different cultural heritages.
  • A YMC is knowledgeable about, and able to effectively utilize, a variety of resources in youth ministry
    B) Education and/or ExperienceBachelor’s Degree, or working towards. (Religious Studies or related field a plus.)
    • 3-5 year experience in youth ministry
    • Is a fully practicing Catholic known to be committed to spiritual growth• This position requires frequent weekend, evening and off-site work.

Youth Ministry Coordinator (Part-time) – Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, San Jose

Coordinator of Youth Ministry (Part-time)- Sacred Heart of Jesus – San Jose           

POSITION SUMMARY:

The coordinator of youth ministry (CYM) provides vision and coordination for the parish’s efforts in

ministry to young people from 9th through 12th grades. This includes high school

sessions (weekly or bi-weekly gatherings) and monthly activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

(other duties may be assigned)

Parish staff member–the CYM will be responsible to:

  • Attend regular staff meetings
  • Participate in staff planning
  • Communicate to staff about youth ministry activities
  • Seek staff input in planning youth ministry activities
  • Be a resource person to parish staff on issues related to youth and youth ministry
  • Serve as the liaison with the pastor, parish staff and the parish council

Parish Youth Ministry–the parish youth ministry program integrates adolescent catechesis into a comprehensive ministry to, with, by and for young people. The CYM’s responsibilities include:

  • Facilitating the Youth Leadership Team, which is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive youth ministry program
  • Coordinating the recruitment, training, supporting, and evaluating of volunteers in the youth ministry program
  • Developing a systematic and intentional plan for adolescent catechesis that utilizes a creative variety of formats, settings, and timeframes
  • Providing resources (print, video, web, diocesan events) for effective programming
  • Providing appropriate training for the adults and young people in leadership positions
  • Fostering the involvement of young people in the life of the parish
  • Coordinating the outreach to and evangelization of all young people in the parish
  • Providing appropriate services and programs for parents of adolescents
  • Advocating for a comprehensive vision of youth ministry, based on the1997 USCCB document, Renewing The Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry
  • Serving as the liaison with the diocesan office of youth ministry and their programs, services and resources

OTHER OR SHARED RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with the Liturgy Committee in the implementation and development of the youth

liturgy (contemporary liturgy)

  • Collaborates with other staff in planning common projects

QUALIFICATIONS TO PERFORM THE JOB SUCCESSFULLY:

Education and/or Experience:

  • A. in Theology, Pastoral Ministry, or related field, knowledge of Catholic teachings, catechesis and documents on youth ministry
  • Language Skills:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; proficiency in composing reports, correspondence and letters and in publishing e-newsletters and flyers in English and Spanish, ability to develop and facilitate youth programs; ability to read and understand church documents and guidelines.
  • The employee must be able to work cooperatively with other members of the staff and with youth leaders and volunteers. The employee must be able to multitask.

Other Requirements:

The employee must be bilingual in English and Spanish.

The employee must have knowledge of Church structure and culture. The employee must have knowledge of current youth culture and current trends and issues within those cultures. Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality.
