Part-time Director of Music for St. Justin Parish

The Director of Music for St. Justin Parish is responsible for the effective planning, coordination, and execution of the music for all parish liturgical/sacramental celebrations – including Sunday Masses, Holy Days, Christmas, Triduum, Easter, Confirmation, as well as any other special liturgical event.  The main goal of the Music Director is to prepare music that will lead the parishioners to full, conscious, and active participation in all of our liturgical celebrations.  The position will currently be 18hrs/week but has the possibility of increased hours depending on post pandemic environment.  The Director reports to the Pastor and will work closely with Parochial Vicar, Catechetical Director, Wedding Coordinator, and all music ministry individuals.

Specific duties/responsibilities include:

  • Provide for music and musicians for all Sunday and other major celebrations. Select liturgically appropriate music for all liturgies with a goal of engaging the congregation in worship.
  • Serving as principal musician and ensemble director.
  • Recruiting, scheduling, and ensuring proper preparation of all parish music ministers.
  • Train, direct, supervise and expand choirs, ensembles, and volunteer cantors.
  • Work to foster and create a spirit of collaboration with the presiders and other liturgical ministers.
  • Organize liturgical minister training and formation.
  • Keep well-informed of developments in liturgical practice and music nationally as well as Diocesan policies and guidelines and update music ministers and the parish on these matters.
  • Other assignments as requested by the Pastor.

Requirements:

  • Must be a practicing Catholic and possess strong knowledge of Catholic music and worship.
  • Possess a passion for liturgical music and is committed to reflecting the parish community’s needs. Must be committed to quality liturgical celebrations.
  • Experience as a director and conductor in liturgical settings; skilled in working with a variety of people and diverse teams with sensitivity to a multi-cultural parish community.
  • Skilled accompanist with ability to lead ensembles, and a pleasant singing voice.
  • Strong leadership, well-organized, and able to work in a collaborative setting; must be attentive to detail with good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Dependable, responsible, self-motivated, creative, and accountable.
  • Working knowledge of sound systems and microphones.
  • Must successfully pass required background and fingerprinting check as well as all Safe Environment Training.
  • The preferred applicant will have significant music/liturgical ministry experience, knowledge of and pastoral application of Church liturgical documents and music resources, and a bachelor’s degree in music or equivalent education and experience.

Community Engagement Coordinator, St. Simon Catholic Parish

This is a member of the Pastoral Staff who oversees a community engagement strategy focused on welcoming new members to the community, and engaging parishioners to embrace their stewardship call to share their time and talent with the St. Simon Parish Community while fulfilling their spiritual and faith experience as community members. The Coordinator supports parish events that help to create a “one community” collaboration between the church and school.   The Community Engagement Coordinator derives great satisfaction out of helping all members get the most out of their St. Simon Parish community experience.

 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Leadership style that enables, encourages, and supports lay leadership and partnership within the parish. Must be collaborative and team oriented.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be organized and detail oriented with good follow-through skills.
  • Experience as a St. Simon parishioner and understanding of parish programs and ministries are a benefit.
  • Must have technology skills including use of Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms.

Essential Functions

 

Welcome Ministry

  • Staff resource to the Parish Life Group Welcome Ministry. Assures that the committee is staffed and functioning as defined by pastoral staff.  Oversees Welcome Ministry meetings.  Assures that the welcoming materials are current and complete.
  • Assures that the data collected during the registration process is captured for a variety of database applications, and that the information is disbursed and communicated to staff and parish leaders.
  • Launches the welcome process to assure that new members are assimilated into the parish community in a deliberate way. Will meet with all incoming members of the community to explain what St. Simon has to offer.
  • Communicates any identified unmet needs to pastoral staff and parish leaders.
  • Supports parish stewardship efforts by helping to identify new member gifts and talents.
  • Works to identify families for referral to parish ministries, supports and promotes St. Simon Parish School, Preschool of Religion, Children’s, Youth, and Adult Faith Formation by liaising with Pastoral Staff coordinators.

 

Stewardship of Time and Talent

  • Supports parish stewardship efforts by helping to identify new and existing member gifts and talents. Works to connect members to parish ministry opportunities for sharing their gifts.
  • Maintains a Volunteer Listing of current members serving in ministry, and helps volunteers understand the Diocesan policies for Safe Environment.

 

Hospitality Ministry

  • Creates a welcoming environment for parishioners and guests before and after Masses by coordinating greeters and ushers for liturgies.
  • Coordinates “Donut Sundays” or other hospitality activities intended to provide opportunities for parish members to engage with one another after Mass.

 

May be given other duties from time to time as assigned by the pastor.  The Community Engagement Coordinator is required to attend regularly scheduled pastoral staff meetings and other parish gatherings.

 

Education and Experience:  Background or education in related fields required.  Experience in social media marketing is a plus.  Active member of the St. Simon Catholic Parish community and familiar with program offerings of both the church and school a plus.

 

Language Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills in English required;.  Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.

 

Computational Skills: Must be able to maintain a matrix of various activities to support the community engagement strategy.

 

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and respond to a variety of situations related to community engagement.  Ability to understand and apply guidelines and organizational ability required.

 

Physical Demands: While performing duties of this job, the employee must be able to transport materials and equipment (up to 30 pounds) to and from various locations as necessary. The employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, use hands in repetitive motion tasks, handle objects, talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

 

Working Conditions: The employee is expected to work a 19-hour workweek. The 19 hours will be on a flexible schedule as work demands.  Weekend work, especially Sundays, will be common and expected. Occasional evening work will be required.

 

Other Requirements: The employee must demonstrate a history of effective leadership, good judgment, initiative, confidentiality and discretion. Must be a practicing Roman Catholic.
